The Inconvenient Truth
Factual information is what makes free and open markets work. The more information available, the better for buyers, sellers and the health and efficiency of the market itself.
The vertiginous rise of prices in the Toronto housing market provides clear evidence of what can happen in the absence of comprehensive public data.
In the Toronto real estate market access to timely pricing information is totally controlled by members of the Toronto Real Estate Board. The public is at the mercy of the real estate establishment and the many salespeople who filter and manipulate this critical information for their own purposes.
The rational of the Toronto Real Estate Board for withholding this vital information from the public on the basis of privacy concerns is not supported by logic, law or fact.
There are easy and straightforward ways to maintain the privacy of sellers and buyers many of which are currently in place. But the fact is that specific real estate transactions are and must remain a matter of public record and open public access.
Our real estate marketplace needs more transparency ... not less.
